When thinking for the mobile web there are few approaches to take when designing our sites, for the mobile web. These approaches reduce to mobile applications and dedicated mobile sites, along with the newest advance in the mobile web design responsive web design (RWD). Mobile applications and dedicated mobile sites are very similar in many characteristics. Dedicated mobile sites may be seen as the mobile browsing cousin to mobile applications. Both of these platforms display a different user interface than our current desktop websites. When establishing our mobile sites with either mobile applications or dedicated mobile sites we must always remember to implement a user interface design that is akin to our desktop website, to provide a familiar user experience for our target audiences. Though these two types of mobile platforms are much more optimized for the mobile web, and provide much fast load speeds, they also limit the amount of information and content we present to our target audiences. These sites are also a completely different aspect than our desktop sites; if we choose to go with either of these platforms, we must be ready to maintain more than one site.
The newest advance in the mobile web is known as responsive web design (RWD). RWD is a completely different concept than mobile applications and dedicated sites, with this concept we are able to only maintain one site, for both desktop and mobile browsing. Establishing our websites with RWD will allow our sites to be fully optimized for both desktop and web browsing, by allowing the site to readjust its format to the screen size it is being displayed on.
This will allow us to present all the same content, user interface and user experience to all of the members of our target audiences, on any device they choose to view our site on. the most difficult aspect that most of us are going through is trying to clone our current user experiences from our desktop sites on to our mobiles, well with RWD we will not have to worry about that anymore, because the site will automatically do it by itself. RWD will also help boost our SEO strategies, and will also take away the extra time and effort put into maintain two sites and establishing two sets of strategies for SEO purposes.
Picking a mobile platform should be based upon your organization’s brand, combined with what your target audience is looking; we just need to remember that the user interface and user experience should always reflect our current desktop websites, for the best mobile results.
